Car Loan Guide

Compare vehicle finance using down payment, total interest, fees and the full cost of ownership.

What is a car loan?

A car loan finances part of a vehicle purchase and is generally secured against the vehicle. The lender may retain an interest in the registration until closure.

Who it may suit: Buyers who need a vehicle and can afford the EMI alongside fuel, insurance, servicing, parking and repairs.

Understand the full borrowing cost

An EMI is only one part of the decision. Compare the annual interest rate, whether it is fixed or floating, total interest across the tenure, processing fees, insurance, taxes, late-payment charges and foreclosure or part-payment rules.

  • Compare the on-road price, not only the ex-showroom price.
  • Check processing, hypothecation, insurance and foreclosure charges.
  • Include depreciation and recurring running costs in the decision.

Plan the tenure and repayment

A larger down payment can reduce borrowing, but it should not exhaust emergency funds. Avoid stretching the tenure merely to fit a more expensive vehicle into the monthly budget.

Ask for an amortisation schedule showing how each payment is split between principal and interest. A longer tenure can reduce the monthly EMI while increasing the total amount repaid.

How to compare lender offers

  1. Compare offers for the same amount and tenure.
  2. Ask for the effective annual cost and total repayment, not only the headline rate.
  3. Check whether the rate can change and how that affects EMI or tenure.
  4. Read fee, insurance, security, guarantor and prepayment terms.
  5. Verify the lender is regulated and keep a copy of every signed document.

Practical checklist before you apply

  • Compare dealer finance with independent lender offers.
  • Confirm whether add-ons or insurance are optional.
  • Budget fuel, service, tyres, parking and annual insurance.
  • Ask for closure documents and hypothecation-removal steps.

Questions to ask the lender

  • What is the total amount I will repay if I follow the schedule?
  • Which fees are paid upfront and which are added to the loan?
  • Can the interest rate, EMI or tenure change?
  • What happens after a missed or delayed payment?
  • What are the part-payment and foreclosure conditions?
  • Which insurance or add-on products are optional?
