What is a personal loan?
A personal loan is usually unsecured credit repaid through fixed monthly instalments. Approval, rate and amount depend on the lender’s assessment of income, credit history and repayment capacity.
Who it may suit: People considering a defined expense who can repay without disrupting rent, essential bills, insurance, emergency savings or existing EMIs.
Understand the full borrowing cost
An EMI is only one part of the decision. Compare the annual interest rate, whether it is fixed or floating, total interest across the tenure, processing fees, insurance, taxes, late-payment charges and foreclosure or part-payment rules.
- Compare the rate and total repayment across the full tenure.
- Check processing, documentation, late-payment and foreclosure fees.
- Avoid borrowing merely because a pre-approved offer is available.
Plan the tenure and repayment
Personal-loan tenures are commonly shorter than home-loan tenures, so the EMI can take a meaningful share of monthly income. Test the payment against a difficult month, not only a normal month.
Ask for an amortisation schedule showing how each payment is split between principal and interest. A longer tenure can reduce the monthly EMI while increasing the total amount repaid.
How to compare lender offers
- Compare offers for the same amount and tenure.
- Ask for the effective annual cost and total repayment, not only the headline rate.
- Check whether the rate can change and how that affects EMI or tenure.
- Read fee, insurance, security, guarantor and prepayment terms.
- Verify the lender is regulated and keep a copy of every signed document.
Practical checklist before you apply
- Write down the exact need and borrow only that amount.
- Keep an emergency buffer after paying the EMI.
- Review existing EMIs and credit-card balances together.
- Confirm part-payment and early-closure rules in writing.
Questions to ask the lender
- What is the total amount I will repay if I follow the schedule?
- Which fees are paid upfront and which are added to the loan?
- Can the interest rate, EMI or tenure change?
- What happens after a missed or delayed payment?
- What are the part-payment and foreclosure conditions?
- Which insurance or add-on products are optional?
